“Own It”: Cultivating Authenticity in Professional Life

Cultivating an authentic sense of self is both beneficial and essential in today’s fast-paced and sometimes impersonal work environments. Authenticity involves “owning it," a concept that transcends mere acceptance of one’s identity; it embodies a proactive approach to self-awareness and genuine communication. By integrating authenticity into our professional lives, we can foster deeper connections, enhance collaboration, and ultimately create a more fulfilling and productive work experience.

Authenticity is rooted in openess and self-confidence. By admitting mistakes or uncertainties, by “owning it,” professionals can forge deeper connections based on honesty rather than pretense. With repetition, this type of active transparency allows us to feel comfortable with who we are in any situation, eliminating the need to hide behind different masks of professionalism. When we embrace our true selves, we invite empathy, understanding, and trust from colleagues and peers. And if we don’t receive that, we remain secure enough in our identities not to let it affect us. What others think of us does not define who we are.

“Owning” our professional identity means aligning our actions with our core values and beliefs. This connection ensures that our work is guided by personal principles rather than external pressures. By staying true to ourselves, we not only enhance our own experiences but also inspire those around us to embrace authenticity and genuine self-expression.

Ultimately, "owning it" is about confidently acknowledging who we are—our strengths, our weaknesses, and our unique professional journeys. It is an action we take for ourselves. It is also a commitment to personal growth, transparent communication, and creating meaningful connections in the workplace. When we embrace our authentic selves, we transform professional interactions from transactional exchanges into genuine, impactful relationships.

In the weeks that follow I’ll be sharing 10 additional ways we can cultivate and enact an authentic sense of self.
