I am Dr. J. Andrew Kuypers, principal consultant at J. Andrew Communication LLC. With more than 25 years of experience as a full professor at Virginia Tech and former Director of Speech at Dartmouth College, I have authored or edited 17 books on public speaking and strategic communication, helped thousands of people communicate with clarity and purpose, and delivered hundreds of speaking events and keynotes. I now focus on helping professionals, teams, and leaders master the human side of communication in today’s world.

Academic Background

I earned my Ph.D. in communication studies from Louisiana State University after completing my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Florida State University.

I served as Director of Speech at Dartmouth College from 1995 to 2005, where I taught public speaking and oversaw the entire speech program. In 2005, I joined Virginia Tech as a professor in the School of Communication and later advanced to the rank of full professor, focusing on rhetoric and political communication.

Over my academic career, I have published extensively as Dr. Jim A. Kuypers. This includes authoring or editing 17 books and more than 30 journal articles and book chapters. My scholarly work explores public communication, rhetorical criticism, media framing, political communication, and how news media shape public understanding of important issues. Transition to Consulting

After more than two decades in higher education, I decided to bring my deep knowledge and practical experience directly to professionals and organizations. I now operate my consulting and speaking practice full-time as Dr. J. Andrew Kuypers through J. Andrew Communication LLC.

I help leaders and teams strengthen core communication skills such as public speaking, overcoming performance anxiety, and delivering clear, confident messages. I also specialize in building human-centered communication strategies in the AI era by focusing on the creativity, empathy, and critical thinking that technology cannot replace.
