Do you feel trapped in a career rut? Do you struggle to identify your next steps?

You’re not alone. Some surveys suggest as many as half of all US workers, including university faculty, report frustration or dissatisfaction with their jobs. Internationally the figure is even higher.

The negative effects of being in this state can be profound. Motivation decreases. Job satisfaction wanes. You may even experience stress and anxiety. Over time, this stagnation can lead to missed promotions and career advancement opportunities.

I was in just such a place when I started my career, or what I thought would be my career. Miserable. And that’s when I came across the idea of the five-year plan, tried it, and changed what I was doing.

It’s a structured approach to career planning that provides clarity and direction. It allows you to set specific, measurable goals.

Here’s a brief outline of the essential components of a five-year plan:

1. Self-Assessment: What are your strengths and weaknesses? What fuels you in life? Try to understand what you value and what you want to achieve.

2. Set Goals: List some concise and realistic goals for your career. Think in weeks, months, and years here.

3. Skill Inventory: What skills do you need improve or develop? List training you can take and possibilities for mentorship.

4. Networking: Plan to develop your professional relationships. Who can you connect with to support your journey?

5. Plan Reviews: Set times (maybe every quarter) to assess your progress. Be willing to modify your plans to account for changes in you and your goals.

Try it and see what you come up with.
